The new decade – really?

December 31, 2009

Can we party like it’s 1999 here at the end of 2009? I thought we were only coming to the end of a year and had no concept that it was the end of something bigger until the radio, newspaper and TV repeatedly announced their upcoming end of the decade lists. And to think I was ready to ply the wife with a couple of glasses of wine like I always do. Maybe I’ll rent a movie.

With everyone looking back at the “decade of crap” (that’s what I’m calling it) I’d like to throw in my two cents. When did this become a decade? We used to count by tens for decades so I thought it would be 2000 through 2010. It was bad enough when we celebrated the new millennium a year early, Don’t even get me going here, but start at year 1 and add 1000 or a millennium to that twice and tell me what year that would be… And now we are doing it to the decades! That’s crap.
